Barbara Gene Zachary, 85, died Tuesday, February 15, 2010 in Owensboro, Kentucky following a short illness. She was born August 8, 1924, the daughter of Elza Isaac Raibourn and Ola Fay Reid Raibourn, in Oakland City, Indiana. She attended school in Evansville, Indiana and graduated from Bosse High School in 1941. During World War II she was employed at the Army's Signal Intelligence Service, quartered at Arlington Hall in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. Barbara was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church and the Couples Sunday School class since 1959. She was an avid bridge player, a Kentucky Colonel, and enjoyed her travels with the Friendship Force of Western Kentucky, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and with Hospice of Western Kentucky.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Pierce Zachary in 1980. Survivors include her son, David Pierce Zachary and his wife Judy, her daughter, Janet Zachary (Ferguson-Trent), her granddaughter, Rachel Lynn Rice and her husband Brandon, her grandson, Christopher Pierce Zachary, her great granddaughters, Tabitha Lynn Rice and Hannah Marie Rice and her great grandson, Nathanael Leon Rice, all of Owensboro; and her cousins, Lee Ross and his wife Dora of Mims, Florida and Dorothea Beauchamp of Oakland City Indiana.
Her funeral service, officiated by Rev. Todd Love, will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, where visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday and after 1:00 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Memorial Fund of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church or Hospice of Western Kentucky.
