It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barbara Nell Powers Fowler, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She peacefully departed this life on January 29, 2025 at the age of 95 surrounded by her family and friends at the Carmel Home.
Barbara was born October 14, 1929, in Whitesville to the late Ambrose Hugh and Florence Helen Mattingly Powers. She was the youngest of 5 children. Upon graduation at Saint Frances Academy in 1947, she received a music scholarship to Brescia College. She married in 1948 and devoted many years to raising their seven children.
She began her career in 1967 at Brescia College. After 7 years, she took a secretary position at Fleischmann Distillery. Then she returned to Brescia College in 1979 as Executive Secretary to the President, where she remained until 1985.
Barbara was a fun-loving lady who enjoyed being with people, nice shoes, beautiful clothes, dancing and singing. She was a kind person who was a friend to all. She always enjoyed family celebrations and gatherings, especially the good food, grandchildren and babies. Barbara’s legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by family and friends.
Barbara was preceded in death by her sons, Joey Fowler and Mark Fowler, and infant granddaughter Auburn Brooke Riney.
Barbara’s memory will be cherished by her loving children: Randal (Dennis) Fowler, Steve (Annie) Fowler, Kay (Woody) Woodward, Rebecca (Kevin) Jarvis, Susan (Richard) Riney; her eighteen grandchildren: Job Cook, Nathan Fowler, Lynne Cagle, Kate Bell, Stephen M. Fowler, Julie Hammen, Laura Hennessey, David Woodward, Kevin E. Jarvis, Sarah Jarvis, Walker Jarvis, T.R. Riney, Chad Riney, Mary Wallitsch, Lauren Riney, Melissa Bullington, Nicholas Fowler and Alexis Fowler; her 31 great-grandchildren; two nieces; and a nephew.
A funeral Mass celebrating Barbara’s life will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, February 7 at the Carmel Home Chapel. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM (with prayers at 6:00 PM) at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be held Friday, at the Carmel Home, from 11:30 AM until the time of Mass. The burial will be at St. Mary of the Woods Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the Carmel Home staff, caregivers and nurses for the tender and loving care they showed Barbara.
