Arthur L. Smith, 86, of Owensboro, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2005 at Hermitage Care and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Muncie, IN, he was a son of the late Benjamin H. and Lulu Elnora Steelman Smith. Mr. Smith grew up in Southern Indiana in Hazelton and Mt. Olympus, graduating from Mt. Olympus High School in 1936. Following graduation from Lockyear Business College in 1938, he attended Evansville College and worked until 1956 for Servel, Inc. in Evansville as an inspector in the airplane wing division. While at Servel, Mr. Smith also served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army at Fort Chafee, Arkansas during World War II.
From 1956 to 1982, Faultless Caster Corporation employed Mr. Smith as a sales service representative and manager. Following his retirement in 1982, he accepted short-term assignments for Faultless while serving as business manager for Central United Methodist Church until 1996. While living in Evansville, Mr. Smith was an active member of the US Sunday school class at Central United Methodist, singing in the choir for seventeen years and serving on the administrative board. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.
Since 1996, Smith and his wife of 62 years, Betty, formerly Elizabeth Nall of Island, KY have lived in Owensboro and been members of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church. Also surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Don Preuss of Owensboro, his son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Jeannie Smith of Anderson, IN, his grandchildren, Tara Smith Schapmire and her husband Marty of Louisville, Greg Preuss of Evansville, Zach Smith and his wife Brandis of Evansville, Derek Smith and Heidi Smith of Anderson, his great-granddaughter, Lily Schapmire of Louisville, his brother, Charles Hyneman of Patoka, IN, and ten nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his step-father, Bert Hyneman, his brothers, Bernell Smith and William Hyneman, and his sister, Kathaleen B. Lester
Services are at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home where visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday and after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday. Entombment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Ohio Valley, Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church, or the Music Ministry of First Baptist Church.
