Anthony George Bittel

March 26, 1916 — June 4, 2002

Anthony Tony George Bittel, Sr., 86, of 3000 Bittel Rd, Owensboro, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at his homethe home in which he was born and lived his entire life. The Owensboro native was a member of the Immaculate Catholic Church; farmer (raising burley and dark tobacco his pride and joy of crops); partner in the Owensboro Tobacco Company and the Big Independent Warehouse; and in 1975, became one of the five new owners of the Owensboro National Bank. He was a Charter member of the Daviess County Lions Club in which he held numerous offices and worked fervently on the Daviess County fair and other club projects. In 1999 the Lions honored him by naming their new meeting hall the Anthony Bittel Building. He was Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Association from 1958-70, was an organizer of the Kentuckiana Livestock, served on the Brescia University Board of Director, Owensboro Tobacco Board of Trade, was a member of the Farm Bureau and the Immaculate Mens Club. In 2000, he was awarded the Owensboro-Daviess County Democratic Golden Rooster award for his loyalty to the Democratic Party.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anslemine Ann Reisz Bittel; four sons, Don Bittel, Gene Bittel, Hugh Bittel and Anthony Bittel, Jr. all of Owensboro; a daughter, Joyce Yeiser of Owensboro; 16 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 5 step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are 1:30 P.M. Friday, June 7, 2002 at Immaculate Catholic Church with entombment in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery. Friends may call at the Glenn Funeral Home from 1-8 P.M., Thursday, June 6, 2002 and after 10 A.M. on Friday. Prayers will be said at 7 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
