Annette Louise Berkshire, 68, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, October 27, under the care of Hospice of Western Ky after a valiant battle with cancer. She grew up in Maceo, the daughter of the late Rosalie (Thornberry) and Harry Green Berkshire. Annette was a member of Owensboro Christian Church.
Once an active, healthy toddler, Annette was struck down by a massive stroke that left her unable to walk or talk at first. With her mother’s determination, perseverance, and nursing skills, she rallied to live a meaningful, productive life. Her challenges were many, but she met every obstacle with grit and determination. She faced life with dignity and humor amplified by her sunny disposition and enduring patience.
Annette was a Special Olympics champion, earning gold medals in her favorite sports year after year. She loved classic country music and could dance and sing with the best of them. She was especially proud to work at Pinocchio’s Restaurant, an Opportunity Center program in Owensboro, where she greeted guests and made many friends who loved and respected her.
Annette is survived by her sisters, Bonita Echstenkamper (William), Jan Hurst (Carl), and Barbara Berkshire who was her sister guardian and caregiver; also, her nieces, Andrea Echstenkamper (David) and Lauren Davidson (Anthony), and grand-nieces Penelope and Samantha Davidson and Aurelia and Zola Kwonkamper.
She will be missed. She brought so much joy and unconditional love to her family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory on Sunday, November 1, from 1p.m. to 3p.m.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Opportunity Center of Owensboro, 1101 E Byers Ave, Owensboro, KY 42303.
