Anne Mattingly Padgett

Anne Mattingly Padgett was born in Owensboro. She is preceded in death by her parents Frances Williams Dixon and George Paul ''G.P.'' Mattingly. She was a member of First Baptist Church for most of her life. A graduate of University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University, she taught English at Daviess County High School before transitioning to life as a community supporter and enthusiast. She loved this city. She served on various boards and charity organizations, including the Daviess County Medical Alliance, Junior League, Community College Foundation, United Way and the Salvation Army.

She was most defined by her friendly, outgoing personality, optimism, love of news and politics, fierce loyalty to her friends, and extensive travel. She hitchhiked through Europe, experienced communist Russia in the late 1970s, walked the Great Wall of China twice, watched the sunset at the Parthenon in Athens and the stars twinkle over Ayers' Rock in Australia, tangoed in Buenos Aires and at Carnival, salsaed in San Miguel de Allende, was charged by a hippo in the wilds of Zimbabwe, stood at the Cape of Good Hope, and had numerous adventures in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the US. A true globetrotter.

She is survived by her husband of 39 years, William Neil Padgett, M.D., daughter Ashley (Jared) Bradley and grandsons Townes and Indio, all of Nashville, stepdaughter Ellen Padgett (Lee) of Seattle, and niece Leigh Anne Terry of Owensboro.

The family is grateful for the kind words and tokens of support received from the community. In lieu of flowers, food, and donations, we suggest and appreciate this bequest to Anne's legacy: choose a young person in your life and encourage him or her to explore a different culture and to travel, or contribute to a student's year abroad. Immerse yourself in the culture and experience of having travelled. This embodies her spirit and is what she wanted to pass on; the family appreciates you honoring this request.
