Anne Egerton McDaniel, 90, of Owensboro, died Friday, August 12, 2016 in the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky.
She was born on June 13, 1926, in Washington, D.C., to the late William Graham Egerton and Rebecca White Egerton. After living in numerous cities along the East Coast, she moved with her family to Cadiz, Kentucky when she was nine. She attended Cadiz Grade School and Trigg County High School, where she graduated in May, 1944.
She worked as a typist and file clerk at Fort Campbell from 1944 to 1945. In September 1945 she enrolled at Western Kentucky State Teachers College in Bowling Green, which she attended until she married James Edward McDaniel of Owensboro on June 14, 1948. While they lived in Louisville, she worked at the Kentucky Crippled Children's Association and taught kindergarten at Brandeis Elementary School.
In September, 1949 she and her husband moved to Owensboro where they raised two children, Mark Stephen McDaniel and John Michael McDaniel.
She graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1962. For many years she taught at Cravens Elementary School, Goodloe Elementary School, and other schools in the Owensboro Public School System.
A tireless and passionate advocate for civil rights for African Americans and other minorities, Anne often attended meetings of the Owensboro Human Relations Commission. In 2003 she received the Rosa Parks Justice Resource Center Empowerment Award in honor of her work to promote diversity and empower minorities in Owensboro.
For more than 50 years she was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Anne is survived by her husband, James Edward McDaniel; her sons Mark (Rev. Isaac McDaniel) and John (Barbara) McDaniel; her grandchildren Otis McDaniel and Lucy McDaniel; her great-granddaughter Chloe McDaniel; and her brother William Graham Egerton, Jr.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Hospice of Western Kentucky.
