Anna Ruth Thompson, 89, of Owensboro, passed away Saturday, March 28, at Morning Pointe of Owensboro. She was born June 7, 1936, to the late Theodore and Gertrude Hayden. Anna Ruth was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Throughout her life, Anna Ruth embodied the virtues of devotion and care, dedicating herself to her family and home with a steadfast spirit. As a homemaker, she excelled in creating a nurturing environment filled with warmth and comfort. Her talents were many and varied; Anna Ruth was an amazing cook whose meals brought family and friends together around the table. She was also gifted with the art of sewing, crafting clothing with skill and creativity. She served her community by volunteering with Right to Life.
Anna Ruth’s passion for her garden was well known to all who visited her. She nurtured a grand garden, tending her flowers with care and patience. Her love for horticulture was matched by her enjoyment of canning the fruits of her labor, preserving the harvest to be savored throughout the year. Another endearing facet of her personality was her fondness for cardinals—she loved these vibrant birds and surrounded herself with cardinal-themed items that reflected her affection for them.
A devoted fan of Notre Dame football, Anna Ruth found joy in supporting the team. Beyond her hobbies and interests, what truly defined her was her role as a mother. She was a great mother who treasured every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. These bonds of family were the cornerstone of her life.
In addition to her parents, Anna Ruth is preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Charles E. Thompson; son, Charlie Thompson; sister, Mary Blackburn; and brothers, James Hayden and Earl Hayden.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Eddie Thompson, LeaAnn Johnson, Susie Mattingly (Chris) and Gail Raley (Yogi); grandchildren, Dwayne Johnson, Heather Johnson, Brian Mattingly (Karla) Ashley Dexter (David), Robert Raley and Karl Raley; great-grandchildren, Harper Nix, Ledger Nix, Keziah Johnson, Maddy Johnson, Bentley Mattingly, Kaiden Mattingly, Ellie Dexter, Sam Dexter, Holden Raley and Kamryn Raley; sisters, Alice Howard and Margaret Velotta; brother, Marty (Marie) Hayden; sister-in-law, Rose Hayden; best friend for many years, Betty Lee Whittinghill; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Anna Ruth will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 2nd, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Raphael Cemetery. Care by Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
