Anna Ruth Denton DeHaven

Ruth Denton DeHaven, 89, of Owensboro passed away Friday, September 14, 2012 at her home. Anna Ruth Denton DeHaven was born in Robards, Henderson County, KY on April 1, 1923. She was the youngest daughter of Dr. Rex Monroe Denton and Nellye Elizabeth Handley Denton. Dr. Rex and Nellye, along with five children, 3 boys and 2 girls, moved to Fordsville, KY in 1929. This is where Ruth grew up. She graduated from Fordsville High School in 1941. Ruth entered the Norton Memorial Infirmary School of Nursing in 1941. She graduated in 1944. She worked in many fields of nursing, including obstetrics at the former Owensboro-Daviess County Hospital, in public health, as a school nurse, in private duty nursing at ODCH and the former Mercy Hospital, and Home Health Nursing in Daviess County.
Ruth was a charter member of Century Christian Church, a member of its Discovery Bible Class and of the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was also a member of The Bells of Ireland Garden Club and the Beautification Committee of the City of Owensboro.
Ruth served on the boards of directors of the Daviess County Cancer Society and the Help Office. She served in a number of volunteer positions in the community, including the Boy Scouts of America, school organizations including PTA, school councils and higher education boards, and did volunteer work for the Wendell Foster Center in the 1960's and 1970's. For many years she was a member of the Art Guild and the Kentucky Poetry society.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Charles William DeHaven, Sr. She is survived by her four sons, Charles William DeHaven, Jr. of Owensboro, Paul Denton DeHaven and his wife Barbara of Atlanta, John David DeHaven and his wife Terry of Bowling Green, and Stanton Leman DeHaven of Hampton, VA; four grandchildren, Paul Denton DeHaven of Atlanta, Heather Ann Florence DeHaven of Shreveport, LA, John Gregory DeHaven of Lexington, and Matthew David DeHaven of Hampton, VA; two great-grandchildren, Isabella DeHaven and Zachary Denton DeHaven; 4 nieces, 10 nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mrs. DeHaven, officiated by the Rev. Andy Campbell, will be at 12:00 noon Tuesday at Century Christian Church. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday and from 10:00 a.m. until noon Tuesday at the church.
