Amelia "Elizabeth" (Hawes) Anderson

Amelia “Elizabeth” (Hawes) Anderson passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, August 3, 2024. Elizabeth was born on September 27, 1922, in Claude, Texas, to the late Samuel Hawes and Laura Cobb. The Hawes family farmed wheat, and, as a result of the Dust Bowl, in the early 1930s, they moved to Daviess County, Kentucky. Elizabeth graduated from Daviess County High School in 1940, then worked at Ken-Rad in Owensboro for two years before moving to Evansville, Indiana. There, she was a real life “Rosie the Riveter,” working in a Frigidaire factory riveting the fuselages for P-47 aircraft during World War II. When the War ended in 1945, Elizabeth reunited with her sweetheart, Marvin J. Anderson, marrying on March 6, 1946. The pair briefly lived in Bowling Green before moving to Louisville, then to the Indianapolis area, settling near Mooresville on their beloved Joppa farm.

In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband Marvin Anderson, her siblings, Malcolm, Bruce, Rebecca Moreland, Louis, and Samuel Cobb.

Those left to cherish her memory include her three children, Gary, Donald (Karen), and Bruce (Nicole). She was grandma to Laura Sutton (Steven) and Rebecca Hameda, and a proud great grandma to Kayden, Trent, William, Atticus, Mara, and Elio. She also leaves behind many other family members and close friends.

A Celebration of Life will be at 2:00 pm on Sunday, August 25 at Martha’s Orchard, 6578 S. County Rd E. Clayton, IN 46118. Visitation will be Saturday, August 24 from 2:30 until 5:00 pm at Hampton Gentry Funeral Home, 106 Shaw St., Plainfield, IN 46168.
