Alma U. Tomes, 92, of Owensboro went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. The McLean County native was born September 8, 1931, to the late Bernice Underwood and Sallie Troutman Underwood. Alma graduated from Calhoun High School, class of 1949 and received her undergraduate degree from Brescia College and graduate degree in Elementary Education from Western Kentucky University. She taught first and second grades and retired from the Daviess County Public School System. Alma married her high school sweetheart, Bobby Joe Tomes and raised two sons. She was a founding member of Bellevue Baptist Church and a devoted student of the bible. Alma enjoyed crocheting, quilting, and was an avid reader and UK basketball fan. She and her husband enjoyed collecting antique glass and taking trips to Florida.
In addition to her parents, Alma also was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Bobby Tomes in 2001; all her siblings; and her Pomeranian/Chihuahua, Tootsie.
Those left to cherish her memory include her two sons, Michael Tomes and wife Debby of Oxford, MS and Terry Tomes and wife Jessica of Owensboro; five grandchildren, Shawn, Tyler, Tara, Jeffrey, and Katelynn; fifteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 15 at Christ Chapel at Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
