Alma Lee Whitmer Martin

Alma Lee Whitmer Martin, 96, of Owensboro, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2015, at the Carmel Home. She was born August 14, 1919 in Muhlenburg County, daughter of the late Charles E. and Eura Noffsinger Whitmer. Alma retired from the Daviess County School System after teaching first-grade at Masonville Elementary School for 21 years. She was a graduate of Owensboro Senior High School in 1936, then received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1962, and a master's degree from Western Kentucky University in 1966. As an educator, she advanced to Rank 1 in 1967. Alma was a member of Masonville United Methodist Church, where she played the organ for many years. She enjoyed reading her Bible and the newspaper every day. She had volunteered at the Carmel Home for 14 years helping with arts and crafts, and also was a volunteer for the Help Office of Owensboro.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Dempsey Martin on October 27, 1980; a sister, Mary Helen Mayes on February 28, 2007; and two brothers, Charles Whitmer on July 6, 1972 and Robert Whitmer on September 11, 2010.

Survivors include her son, Phillip Martin (Rebecca); granddaughter, Alma Lee Martin Ward (Pat); grandson, Jeffrey Martin, great- grandchildren, Kris Bretz (Matt) and Ryan Parrish (Nikki); and great-great-grandchildren, Morgan, Matthew, and Michael Bretz, all of Owensboro.

Services will be Noon Thursday, September 3, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with burial following in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 2 to 8 P.M. Wednesday and after 10 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
