Alice Marie Clary Tanner, 88, of Owensboro, went to her eternal home on November 6, 2024, while under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. Marie was born in Owensboro on July 16, 1936, to the late George and Katie Peckenpaugh Clary Sr.
A woman of profound Christian faith, Marie was a devoted member of Crosspoint Baptist Church. There, she served in many capacities, always ready to lend a helping hand whenever there was a need. Her church family held a special place in her heart, and she cherished the fellowship they shared.
Marie dedicated over 20 years to the Daviess County Schools system, retiring as a beloved school bus driver. She also loved playing cards with family and friends and enjoyed going bowling.
Family was the cornerstone of her life. Renowned for her exceptional cooking, she opened her home every Sunday, preparing meals that brought together family and friends in joyous fellowship. Her hospitality extended to birthdays, holidays, and any occasion celebrating togetherness. She was deeply involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, attending as many of their activities as possible, from sporting events to concerts. Her nurturing spirit shone brightest when she held babies, often rocking them gently to sleep.
Above all else, Marie was a servant to all—embodying generosity, love, and kindness in every aspect of her life. Her legacy of compassion and selflessness will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Samuel Morton Tanner; brothers George Clary Jr., Franklin Clary, Bill Clary, and Robert Clary; and sisters Loretta Pendleton, Nina Goldsberry, Alta Grant, and Ruth Guinn.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children Glenn Tanner (Pam) of Hartford, Larry Tanner (Lisa) of McLean County; Karen Bickel (Scott), Jerry Tanner (Patty), and Greg Tanner (Beth), all of Owensboro; her grandchildren Logan Midkiff (Sarah), Zack Tanner (Lori), Nick Tanner (Tora), Jake Tanner (Jaclyn), Jared Tanner (Davi), Jason Tanner (Natalie), Jodi McCarty (Nick), Jonathan Tanner (Rebekah), Sarah Tanner, Rachel Bailey (Travis), Brad Clark (Mandy), Brandon Clark, Becca Bogucki (Eric), Cameron Howard (Elissa), Andi Howard, Jayden Howard, Tyson Howard, and Keylan Howard; 39 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Linnie Clary.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the hospice staff who provided compassionate care for Marie.
The funeral service for Mrs. Tanner will be held at 10:00 am Monday, November 11, 2024, at Living Hope Community Church. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm Sunday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and after 9:00 am Monday at the Church. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
