Alfred Gardner Kirkland, 71, of Owensboro, passed away Monday, July 11, 2016 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Born in Owensboro, he was a son of the late Alfred C. and Marjoe Gardner Kirkland. Gardner graduated in 1962 from Owensboro High School, where he was on the golf team and basketball team. He attended Mississippi State University on a golf scholarship and graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1967. Gardner was the former general manager of People's Security Finance, had been the owner of Silver Cup Trophies, and Chip Shot, a golf driving range where he gave lessons. He was a member of Am Vets Post 119 where he was active with volunteer efforts to raise funds for veterans causes. He had been a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. Gardner was an avid fan of the University of Kentucky basketball.
Mr. Kirkland is survived by his brother and sister-in-law William Kirkland and Mary Eve Proffitt Kirkland of Lexington.
A service of committal will be 10:00 a.m. Friday in Christ Chapel at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Kentucky Wesleyan College in the name of his father Alfred C. Kirkland. Messages of condolence may be placed at www.glennfuneralhome.com.
