Agnes Muriel Gillim

January 22, 1933 — February 24, 2018

Agnes Muriel Ling Gillim, 85, of Owensboro, KY, passed away February 24, 2018 at Hermitage Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born January 22, 1933, in Newman, KY, to the late Lewis and Flora Hagan Ling. Muriel attended Mount Saint Joseph Academy, was a graduate of St. Frances Academy, and attended Brescia University. She received her Master's in Education and Library Science from Murray State University and did post graduate work at Western Kentucky University. Muriel enjoyed 30 years of teaching school at Stanley Elementary, Tamarack Elementary, and Highland Elementary Schools. She was especially honored to teach under Aubrey Pendley (her first principal), Orville Sharp, and most of her years teaching under her very favorite principal, Glenn M. Young. Muriel also worked in the library at KWC for many years during the summers and taught GED Adult Education for several years in the evenings.

She was a member of Blessed Mother Catholic Parish for many years and taught CCD there for a number of years. Muriel was an extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Owensboro Mercy Hospital and OMHS, and administered Holy Communion to patients at Wellington Parc, Hillcrest Nursing Home, and the elderly homebound.

Muriel first volunteered As a Grey Lady at Mercy Hospital, and volunteered a lot of her time to being involved in Hospice of Western Kentucky, Women's Club of Owensboro, OMHS Auxiliary (Lifetime Member), Golden Partners, Daughters of Isabella, St. Vincent de Paul's Society, and Social Justice Committee at Blessed Mother Parish. Muriel was also a former member of the Owensboro Hillbilly and Friendship Camping Clubs.

She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Pauline Ling, Marie Lucille Puckett, Ruby Ling, and Marietta Alvey; and her brothers, Truman, Houston, George, James, Anthony "Bub," Sherman, and J.L. Ling.

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Damon Duff Gillim of Owensboro; son, Randall Duff (Vicki) Gillim, of Ohio County; grandchildren Brandi (Frank "Bub") Smith, of Dundee, and Bridget (Aaron) Abbott, of Reynolds Station; and great-grandchildren, Brylee and Bowen Smith, Keaton, Luke, and Jake Abbott; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be Noon, Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Blessed Mother Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Hartford, KY. Visitation will begin at 10 AM Tuesday, until the mass time at Blessed Mother.

Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to Hospice of Western Kentucky.
